Meggie is a young terrier cross girl who is up for anything !

She is a typical terrier who is energetic and will love to go on long walks with her new family. Very affectionate and loving, just waiting for that right person to take her away so she start her new life.

I have come to Mayflower, along with my sister Rosie, because our previous owners have decided that they can’t live together anymore.

Although our Mum loved us very much, she is moving into a small flat where pets aren’t allowed.

My carers say that I’m very loving but very vocal.

There’s nothing wrong with that – I’m just trying to catch your attention so that you can see how

handsome I am.

A home together would be just perfect as we have never been separated.

Why was I left behind???

My owners moved suddenly overnight but they forgot to take me with them.

I tried meowing and meowing but they didn’t come back.

The neighbours across the road found me on the doorstep the following morning.

Unable to trace my family they contacted Mayflower for help.

So here I am looking for new owners who will love and care for me and hopefully stay put this time!

My owner has been evicted leaving us both without a home.

She has gone back to live with her parents but unfortunately can’t take me with her due to the dog who already lives there.

Although she loved me very much, it was better for me to find a new home so here I am !

I have always been a housecat.

In fact I am quite frightened of the outside world – its too big and scary!

I’m very, very loving

All I want is a home to call my own again and someone to love and care for me. 

In the meantime I’ll just sit here and wait for them

Yet another stray who has fallen on hard times!

Luckily he was taken in from the cold and snow by a kind family.

Unfortunately the young child was frightened of him which was very puzzling for Charlie who only wanted to play.

Charlie tried to make friends by snuggling up to him whenever he could but the little boy just cried louder!

So here he is looking for a new family to love.

Misty is here looking for a new home with her friend, Miner, because of a change in their previous owners circumstances which meant that they were unable to care for them properly anymore.

Misty is a typical laidback whippet who loves nothing better than a nice walk and then to curl up in her basket for a sleep although if you would like to further than ‘round the block’ then she would gladly accompany you.

She hasn’t met any cats but she has lived with rabbits and chickens quite happily.

A home together would be preferable as they are such good friends.

Miner is here looking for a new home with her friend, Misty, because of a change in their previous owners circumstances which meant that they were unable to care for them properly anymore.

All he needs is time and patience and the real Ollie will come shining through. He may be only a little guy but he has a big heart with loads of love to give the right person.

They are very attached to each other so a home together would be preferable.

Spot and his dad, Ollie, are here looking for a new home because their previous owners are moving house and are unable to take these little guys with them.

They have taken a little while to settle into their new surroundings but its all been a strange and upsetting time for them both.

Please remember that Spot is still only a youngster and as such he is loving, inquisitive and always looking for mischief.

Just as a young dog should be.

He is very attached to his dad so we will be looking for a home for them together is that’s at all possible.

My previous owner has gone away to join the Army and can’t take me with him.

There is nobody else in the family able, or willing, to look after me so here I am looking for a new owner.

I was very sad when he left me here and walked away.

I tried barking and barking but he didn’t come back.

My carers here are very nice and the foods good but its not like having your own bed to lie in and someone to share those long walks with.

Come on – give me a chance.

My case is packed.

Blaze is here to look for a new home because his previous owners neighbours were complaining about the noise that Blaze made whenever he was left alone.

Typical of the breed, Blaze hated to be left behind when his family went out.  Therefore his next owners will have to be willing to work with him to build up his confidence and help him realise that his own company for short periods of time isn’t so bad after all.  Mayflower, of course, will give his new owners all the support that they need with this.

Blaze is still very timid but its all new to him at the moment.

He will soon settle down and then we will see his real personality shine through.

Lola was rehomed by us as a young puppy a couple of months ago.

Unfortunately her previous owners didn’t realise what hard work having a young dog would be!

Lola didn’t know which toys were hers, and therefore chewable, and which weren’t !

Her new owners must have the time and patience to help her complete her training so that she can grow up to be a sociable, well mannered adult.

She is absolutely adorable though.

Lovable and mischievous in equal measures!

Just as a young dog should be.

Squeaks has come to Mayflower with her sister, Drew, because their previous family is moving and are unable to take them to their new home.

Squeaks is the more dominant of the pair and is very vocal.

She is very loving once she gets to know you but can be a bit stand-offish with strangers.

All she needs is a little time and patience and she is soon fussing around your feet

Meowing all the time!

A home together would be lovely as they have always been together.

Drew has come to Mayflower with her sister, Squeaks, because their previous family is moving and are unable to take them to their new home.

Drew is the more ‘laid-back’ of the pair and is extremely loving.

She has settled into her new life here quicker than Squeaks and is always one of the first at the front of the pen when its mealtimes.

Drew is always looking for a fuss and purrs like a tractor!

A home together would be lovely as they have always been together but not essential if the right home came along separately.

Biscuit was a stray who was taken in by a kind person one wet and windy night.

She was heavily pregnant and gave birth soon after.

The lady who found her fell in love and decided to keep the little family together.

Unfortunately the lady has become ill and has had to go into hospital.

She will be there for quite some time and has therefore reluctantly asked Mayflower to help find her babies new homes.

Biscuit is an extremely loving cat who likes nothing more than to follow you around.

Mo has had to come into care because her previous owners daughter has developed an allergy to her.  Although they loved Mo very much, they realised that it was in her best interests to find a new loving home.

Mo is an extremely sociable cat who just loves everybody and everything.

She is very tolerant of other cats and, in her previous home, has lived with a dog to whom Mo was very attached.

If you want a cuddly cat who craves your attention then look

no further.

Tara is here because her previous owners were finding it difficult to cope with her.

I guess that they didn’t realise that

having a young dog would be such hard work.

She can be shy when first meeting people but once she knows you she is a delightful girl with a big personality.  Tara is affectionate, cheeky and always full of fun. She absolutely loves to play with toys, especially the dustpan and brush at cleaning time!!!

My owner has had to move into rented accommodation and I can’t go with her.

Although she loved me very much, she didn’t have any choice but to ask Mayflower to help me find a new home.

It was a very sad day when we had to part.  We both cried as she walked away and left me here.

I am a little unsure of strangers but if you take the time to get to know me then you will see the lovable girl that lies within.

All I need is time and space

The result will be worth waiting for.

Monty was yet another stray from the local Pound therefore we don’t have any previous history on him.

Why was wandering the streets alone?

Why didn’t his previous owners come to collect him?

We will never know but we have found him to be a typical terrier.

Feisty and headstrong at times but extremely loving once he knows you and understands his ‘place in the pack’

Millie is here with her friend Bruno.

 They are with us because their owners health meant she couldn’t look after them anymore. She was heartbroken to give her beautiful babies up but knew it was the best thing to do for them.

Millie is a little unsure about what is happening to her at the moment and is relying on her good friend Bruno to give her some reassurance. She is starting to settle in and her tail is starting to wag so we will soon see the real Millie and the glimpses we’ve seen say she will be worth waiting for.

These gorgeous bundles of fun belong to Red.

Red was found wandering all alone and heavily pregnant.  Luckily she was brought here by a caring passerby where she gave birth to these little treasures soon after.

Now they are big enough to find new loving homes of their own.

Before you fall in love please remember that puppies are very hard work and these are no exception.

Pip is very talented – he likes to do Elvis impressions !

Pip is a loving dog once he gets to know you however he is very strong willed and would therefore need a more experienced owner who would be able to remind him of ‘his place in the pack’ !

His carers say that he is very stubborn.

Pip doesn’t particularly like youngsters and his carers feel that his next home would be better if the children (if any) were older rather than toddlers.

Bramble has come into Mayflower to look for a new home because her previous owners have had to move into rented accommodation and were unable to take her with them.

Although they loved her very much, they realised that it was in her best interests to find a new home.

Bramble is quite shy and hides away from strangers under her bedding but once she gets to know you she is very loving and talkative.

She is just adorable!

Please don’t make her wait too long

Chaz is a collie cross who will benefit from being homed with an experienced collie owner. He will need lots of exercise and patience to help him deal with his active collie brain. He is a good looking lad who wants someone to love and who can see what a great boy he will be when in the right home.

He doesn’t show himself very well in the kennel so please don’t let that put you off – look into his eyes and see the boy behind the noise.

Charity begins at home, but it doesn’t have to end there!!!

On a recent trip to Cyprus I found it difficult to ignore the unfortunate circumstances that some of the dogs found themselves in. On my return home, I talked to the team and asked if there was any thing we could do to help.

The abandonment of dogs in Cyprus has worsened because of the recession and many ex-pats living and working in Cyprus are having to return to the UK. Unfortunately not all of us are responsible pet owners and are abandoning their pets, some literally throwing them out of the car window on the way to the airport. We can all criticise the owners but, at the end of the day, through no fault of its own it’s the dog that suffers.

It’s easy to read out reasons and excuses and to say it’s not our problem, but if you are an animal lover you’d find a way to help!

Who will benefit – The dogs that end up in new loving homes.

If you want to climb a mountain someone has to take the first step and that’s what Mayflower did, and what a step it’s been.

We have linked up with several rescues centres in Cyprus and in their words ‘Given Hope’.

Our enthusiasm has been contagious and has inspired like minded people in Cyprus, mainly ex-pats, to support the project and help raise funds.

The more people hear about it the more the fund-raising grows. Even the British Army personnel on the bases are organising fund raising events. It seems that many individuals have been trying to help and now the Mayflower has been the catalyst in providing hope and direction.

With animals from Cyprus there are  ‘quarantine issues’ which is normally added expense, but Cyprus supporters are fund raising to pay to keep the dogs in rescues centres and finding foster homes until the dogs are eligible for the pet passport scheme.

So when they arrive in the UK they can be re-homed. Many with loving families who will be awaiting their arrival at the Airport.

We are pleased to report that the first three dogs to arrive are due March 2010. We shall keep you updated of course.

On another International Aid note the Mayflower recently donated over 1 ton of surplus dog food to a rescue centre in Romania.

IF YOU CAN – DO IT!!!

Ollie is a very shy boy – nervous of strangers – and so doesn’t show himself very well at the moment. Please don’t dismiss him because he barks at you – crouch down, give him a treat and you may be rewarded with a wag of his tail.

He just needs patience and the time so settle into the new life he finds himself having to deal with. Given those two things I’m sure he will show us his true nature ( can’t wait to see the real Ollie ).

Buffy is a small good looking terrier cross. She is one of our long term guests who is finding it hard to find the right owners. She is a strong willed girl who needs an experienced handler and a quiet home. She is a good girl when she knows the rules and knows who the boss is ( not her ! ).

Are you the person she is looking for ?

Due to financial difficulties and having to move house, we have had to leave our previous owners and come to Mayflower to find a new home.

We are sisters and have never been apart so our carers would like to find us a new home together.

We are very friendly but like all rabbits, we are a bit nervous of being picked up.

All we need is time and gentle handling and you will soon see what adorable girls we are.

Lola has been a very poorly girl in the past but is now fit and making excellent progress. She can be nervous of new people and tries to tell them to go away but she is really loving when she knows that you are not going to hurt her. Lola will need a confident new owner who has experience with german shepherds. She needs a loving new home that will understand her issues and where her new owners are willing to work with her to boost her confidence – she will be well worth the effort and Mayflower will give as much help as needed.

Max is a typical terrier cross – very active and constantly on the go ! His party trick is the sit up and beg  which is so cute you will give him whatever he wants.

Can you believe he just wasn’t wanted anymore ?

Lady is a collie cross and was very nervous when she came in to us. Her owners had just divorced and she found herself away from all she knew with people she didn’t trust. Once she realised how nice we all are and noone was going to hurst her she came out of her shell and has shown what a great, dog she is. Come and see for yourself.

My Mum and Dad have decided that they can’t live together anymore.

They have both moved to new homes but there won’t be room at either house for me.

I don’t know why because I wouldn’t take up much room !

I have lived as a house rabbit when I was younger but have been living outside lately.

I’ve heard my carers say that I’m a lovely guy.

All I want is a warm hutch with plenty of hay to play in and a family who will love and care for me forever.

Norma came to us because of a change in her owners circumstances.  She belonged to the lady’s daughter who had lost interest in her and wasn’t caring for her properly anymore.

Norma needs owners who are already experienced with rabbits as she can be dominant.

She doesn’t like other rabbits so would therefore need to be kept as an only pet.

What she really needs is time, patience and the right owners.

I have arrived here from a pound far away where I had ‘over stayed my welcome’ to put it a nice way!

Luckily for me I can now look forward to a brighter future with new owners who will love me forever.

I have heard my carers say that I’m a bright lad who just wants to please.

Perhaps you could take me into the paddock and we can really get to know each other.

It could be the start of something beautiful!

Ellie and Luna are originally homed from Mayflower a number of years ago.

Family circumstances have changed meaning that there is no-one to look after these two adorable little dogs and so they are back with us. They are a real double act and we would ideally like them to go to the same home. Although they are lab crosses they are not very big and Ellie is quite a small girl. We loved them the first time they were here and we are all remembering why – they are both lovely, friendly girls who would make ideal family pets. Come and see !

Ralph

Honey was found wandering round a car park far from any houses.

Her finders were unable to keep her so they asked Mayflower to help find her a new home.

Honey needs owners who are already experienced with rabbits as she can be dominant.

She doesn’t like other rabbits so would therefore need to be kept as an only pet.

What Honey needs is time and patience and the right owners.

Have you got what she needs?

Archie was brought to Mayflower by a kind family who had found him wandering the streets all alone.

They tried very hard to find his previous owners by putting up posters in shops etc but nobody came forward to claim him.

Maybe he was just unwanted and abandoned.

He is just adorable and extremely friendly.

All he needs now is someone to love him and keep him safe this time!

Woo Hoo !!

Look how fast I can run!

I’m here because my previous owners circumstances had changed and they were finding it very difficult to combine work and looking after the children.

Then there was me to consider!

  I was being left long hours home alone and was therefore getting very bored and everyone knows what young dogs do when they get bored!

My new family will have to help me complete my training but I’m very willing to learn (especially if there are tasty treats to be had!)

There are lots of walks out there that we could do together.

Come on, I’m ready if you are.

I have come to Mayflower to look for my new home because my owner is very ill and wont be able to look after me properly anymore.

I can be a bit grumpy when visitors come round but its only because I am missing my old home.

I haven’t lived with kids, dogs or other cats so my carers don’t know how I would react if I was introduced to them.

It was just me and my Mum!

I brought all my own toys and my cuddly blanket but its not the same.

I just want to go home!

Minutes of the Mayflower Sanctuary Annual General Meeting held on Friday 13 February 2009 at the Crown Hotel, Bawtry

Opening Remarks of Chairman

Andrew Isaacs welcomed everyone to the meeting and said how delighted he was to be here. He gave a brief account of his background and why he had agreed to accept the Chairmanship of the Executive Committee of the Sanctuary.

Election of Chairman

The proposal was put to the meeting that Andrew Isaacs be nominated as Chairman of the Executive Committee. The proposer was Val Bellamy, seconded by John Oglesby. Members were asked to vote on the motion which was carried unopposed.

There are eight vacancies available to the Executive Committee and eight nominations have been received as follows:

Copies of the Report and Accounts for the year ended 30 April 2008 were circulated to the meeting. Members were asked to receive and accept the document. Received and accepted.

Re-appointment of Crozier Jones as Auditors

The re-appointment of Crozier Jones as Auditors was agreed by Members.

Any Other Business

There was no other business.

This closed the formal business of the meeting.

The Chairman invited the Sanctuary Manager, Jennie Foxall-Lord, to report on the Sanctuary’s activities over the past year.

Mrs Foxall-Lord wished to record her thanks to staff and volunteers for their hard work and support over the past year. It had been a year of “ups and downs”, but she was sure 2009 will place the Sanctuary on a more even footing to take forward its much-needed work.

In 2008, 398 dogs were rehomed and, as a result of transferring the cattery to the Sanctuary in August 2008, 44 cats had been rehomed up to December 2008. Thanks had to go to Penny Brittain for her work with the cattery following its relocation.

The process of trying to find homes for older dogs continues. Seven are now in foster care, the Sanctuary meeting all expenses. Mrs Foxall-Lord informed members that the Sanctuary has a “Support a Dog” scheme enabling people to fund an older dog through their Bank by Standing Order. The donation can be anything from £1 upwards and this, of course, helps the Sanctuary with the costs of fostering.

A charity shop in aid of the Sanctuary has opened on Retford Road, Manton, Worksop. Volunteers are needed to staff the shop on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and if anyone has a few hours to give this would be greatly appreciated.

Blue Cross continue to provide financial support to the Sanctuary. A new Director has been appointed and it is hoped this support will continue under the new appointee.

The Chairman thanked Mrs Foxall-Lord for her report and commended her on her vision and hard work.

The Chairman closed the meeting and thanked everyone for their attendance.

You didn’t answer my prayer - why? what have I done wrong?

I’m still here and nobody knows why. I have a cute face and a very waggy tail, I’m not very big and have a lovely shiny coat. They say I can be a cheeky chappie  - could SOMEONE PLEASE give me a chance to show just how fab I am ?

I’m Solo - all one my own - no-one to love me.

I don’t show myself very well in the kennel but I’m a real cutie and my coat is sooo soft you’ll just want to cuddle me all day. I don’t really like cats and I would prefer to be the only dog in the house.

I’ve been here so long now that I want all the attention to myself !

Can you find a place in your heart to give me a chance ? I don’t want to spend another Valentine on my own.
