LILLY

A SEVERELY neglected puppy has been taken in to an animal sanctuary in the worst condition that rescue staff have ever seen. The sores and scabs on the four-month-old pup were so bad that staff have been unable to determine what breed she is.

The puppy, called Lilly-Lamb, was maltreated by her owner for weeks before she was eventually rescued last Friday and housed at the Mayflower Sanctuary in Bawtry, which takes dogs from all around South Yorkshire. She was immediately diagnosed with the serious skin disease, demodectic mange, which is caused by mites and leads to fur loss, extreme itching, swelling, sores and boils.

An appeal has been launched to raise money to pay for her treatment, which is likely to cost hundreds of pounds. Josie Moorhouse, re-homing co-ordinator at the sanctuary, said: "When we first saw her she looked like a bundle of sores and scabs with two big brown eyes just pleading to us for help.

"The founder of the sanctuary, who has been rescuing animals for more than 20 years, has never seen a dog in this state before.
"The vet said this was the worst case of demodectic mange she had ever seen," she said. "Lilly didn't know what to do when she saw the other dogs. She just opened her mouth and started shaking. "We've begun her treatment and she's starting to wag her tail and play with the other dogs, but we need more money to continue her treatment.

This little pup deserves all the help she can get." Lilly-Lamb is still too ill to be re-homed, but anyone interested in helping pay for her treatment is asked to call the Mayflower Sanctuary on 01302 711330.

We would also like the thank Doncaster today for doing there piece for lilly on the 28 October 2004

RESCUE WARDENS WEPT AT PUPPY'S PLIGHT

This is the puppy that had animal rescue workers weeping in disbelief.

The young dog was so ravaged by mange that she looked more like a shorn lamb than a puppy.
Now, staff at Bawtry's Mayflower Animal Sanctuary are appealing for donations to help meet care and treatment costs for the puppy they have christened Lily Lamb.
Josie Moorhouse, who works at the voluntary centre on Thorne Road, described the puppy's condition as "the worst seen in 30 years of animal rescue, both by staff here and the vet who treated her".
Josie said: "What met our eyes was so heart-rending - a pathetic bundle of sores and scabs with two very large, very sad brown eyes pleading with us to help her.

The sight of Lily Lamb moved animal sanctuary workers to tears.

"Lily was immediately taken to the vet's and diagnosed with mange.
"This little pup, thought to be between four and six months old, must have been in agony - so much so that she had been gnawing at herself to get some relief from the itching - that then turned into constant pain, with open sores.
"Her treatment will be ongoing and in time her coat will return. Mentally, though, her scars will take much longer to heal.
"We volunteers at the sanctuary often say that we're really not surprised at what people can do to animals, but when we saw Lily, there wasn't a dry eye in the place."
Josie is now appealing for donations to help nurse the traumatised pup back to health. Lily has been placed in a foster home, until she is ready to be re-housed.
Josie added: "We are only a small charity, so if anyone would like to donate to the cost of Lily's ongoing treatment and care, we would be very grateful. As you would expect, we are now trying to give her the best of everything".
