A dog's sense of smell is about 1000 times better than a person's.

A dog's heart beats between 70 to 120 times a minute, compared with a human heart which beats 70 to 80 times a minute.
The common belief that dogs are colour blind is false. Dogs can see colour but it is not as vivid a colour scheme as we see. It is much like our vision at twilight.
The oldest dog that has been reliably documented was an Australian cattle-dog named Bluey. He was put to sleep at the age of 29 years and 5 months!
I bet you didn't know that two dogs survived the sinking of the Titanic
Most people know that a puppy is born blind and toothless but did you know they are born deaf and with no sense of smell. They begin to see at 2-3 weeks, get sense of smell at 3 weeks and get milk teeth at 3-7 weeks.
Dogs have 42 teeth.
Do dogs dream? If you look at your dog while it's sleeping, sometimes you'll see its eyes move and twitch under its eyelids. Humans do this too, and we definitely dream. So researchers are almost positive that dogs have dreams too.
Dogs hearing is a lot better than ours. They hear high-pitched sounds (like some insects make), that we cannot even detect.
Stroking a dog on a regular basis is said to help you reduce stress levels, tension and reduces blood pressure, and the dog loves it too.
The Poodle's "haircut" was to improve their swimming abilities. The pom-poms were left to keep their joints warm !
Dogs have a visual range of 250 degrees compared to the human range of 180 degrees.
Greyfriars Bobby was a famous Skye Terrier immortalised in the Disney movie of the same name. In 1858 a man named John Gray (Old Jock) was buried in old Greyfriars Churchyard, in Edinburgh. This loyal dog slept on his master's grave for the next 14 years until his own death. A statue commemorates this most loyal of dogs.
Each year on April 8th at a ceremony in Tokyo's Shibuya railway station dog lovers do homage to the loyalty and devotion of an Akita dog called Hachiko. Hachiko was the loyal and faithful pet of Dr. Eisaburo Ueno, a professor at Tokyo University. On May 21st 1925, when Hachiko was eighteen months old Dr Ueno died. The next day and for the next nine years, Hachiko returned to the station and waited for his master before walking home, alone
Poisoning of dogs by chocolate is not as uncommon as you might think. Chocolate contains theobromine, found in cocoa beans. While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's in all human chocolate and it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs. It's true that the odd bit of chocolate will probably not cause any toxic reaction but there are variables to consider like the individual sensitivity, dog size and chocolate (theobromine) concentration. What happens if your dog steels all that chocolate on or under your christmas tree...well your dog will get a toxic reaction from the poison it has eaten so you should contact your vet straightaway. The point is you don't leave bottles of medication within reach of children and you shouldn't leave amounts of chocolate within reach of your dog. Just type something like "Chocolate Toxicity" in any search engine to find out the facts and some sad truths.

April Pups

April Pups: Born March 10th 2008 - All girls

Please remember that puppies are hard work. We do not re-home pups with children under 5 years old or if they are to be left for long periods on their own. Sorry

Ziggy

Male Border Terrier - 2 yrs old

Listen guys – I know I’m a handsome little chap but please don’t set your heart on me just yet! See I was found as a stray and I’m still hoping that my owners are looking for me. They just don’t know where to look that’s all but in the meantime I’ll just wait.

Jock

7 year old Jack Russell X

I’m here because my previous owner died and there isn’t anyone in the family who is able to care for me. I have to be on medication because I have had fits but its under control and Mayflower will take care of the vets bills for that little problem. I like it here – its cosy and my carers are very nice but its not like having your own home. Don’t overlook me just because I’m getting on a bit – there’s life in this old guy yet ! Ask to take me into the paddock and get to know me better and you’ll see

Buffy

3 year old Jack Russell X

Aren't I a little cutie, well I think I am.  Most people like little dogs so can someone please tell me why I am still here.  My bed is only small, I'm sure it would fit into a corner of your house, as would I... I can curl up really small.  My only stipulation is that it has to be placed not toooo far from a radiator cos I do like to be warm.  I would feel better if i was loved and adored by a family with older children, a couple or a lovely person that lives on their own.

Charlie

6-7yr old Corgi X

What's a guy got to do to get a forever home around here?  If someone would be kind enough to tell me I'll do it, no problem.  I can do cute, I can do all gooey eyed but it doesn't seem to be working cos I'm still here, still waiting.  I know I'm carrying a little excess weight, just put it down to middle age spread, nothing a couple walks a day wouldn't put right.  A quiet life is all I ask for.....is that toooooooooooooo much to ask for?

Freeman

Male German Shepherd- Adult

Freeman came to us from a local pound where he had been taken as a stray. When his ‘time was up’ and his future was looking very bleak, Mayflower were contacted and agreed to help him find the forever home that he deserves. Once he has had the tangles brushed out of his coat and some good dinners we will see how handsome he really is. He is a big, cuddly softie ! Ask to take him into the paddock and get to know him and you’ll see.

Greg

Male Yorkshire Terrier - 7 yrs old

I am yet another stray who was left to wander the streets. Luckily I was found because the weather lately has been very cold and that’s not good for an old guy like me. As you can see, I have got an eye problem but the Vet says that its only a mild infection that will soon be sorted with medication and TLC. Don’t overlook me just because I’m getting on a bit – there’s life in this old guy yet ! Ask to take me into the paddock and get to know me better and you’ll see.

not good with cats.

Kim

4/5yr old curly coated X breed

I just thought I would say a quick hello so......HELLO.  I'm not ready to be re-homed yet as I'm am very, very, very frightened of people.  My comfort zone is being with another dog, hopefully as time goes on I shall get a lot braver.    When I first came here I wouldn't go near a human being, I'm getting used to them being a round now so that is my first step towards having a loving home.  Who knows what my next step will be, perhaps taking a biscuit from someone's hand...watch this space

Sox

Female Staffordshire Bull terrier
6 months old

I’m here because my previous owners couldn’t cope with my puppy antics. I didn’t know that I wasn’t supposed to chew the table legs ! They were much tastier than my toys ! I’m only a baby you see and will therefore need someone who will help me learn how to behave and teach me some manners. I’m a very loving girl who is more than willing to learn if you have the patience to teach me.

Pippa

X Breed
Female – 3 years old

Stella
s
Shepherd X
Female – 2 years old

Pippa came to stay with us because her owners couldn’t cope with her being so nervous. Her carers find her to be very loving and have found her a friend to help her gain confidence but she still remains nervous of strangers. Pippa needs routine, patience and gentle handling to reach her full potential.
Mayflower will provide continued support for her when she leaves us for her new home

Stella was rescued by a member of the public from a scrap yard where she had been chained up and left as a guard dog. Her chain was so short that she couldn’t reach her water, food bowl or the makeshift shelter that she had as her home. If the people living locally hadn’t taken pity on her and fed her then she would probably have starved. Her plight was reported to the authorities but to no avail. Eventually the owner was persuaded to ‘give her up’ and Stella was brought here. We have found her to an absolute treasure and think that she deserves better for the future. Don’t you?

We do a home visit for all our dogs and the two main things we look for/at are a secure garden and how long the dog will be left alone. Please call for more details.

Chas

2yr old X breed
Chas is yet another dog from the local pound.  He really doesn't like the environment he is in at the moment and therefore doesn't show himself very well during visiting hours even though he is desperatly looking for his loving forever home. As you can see he is gorgeous. He loves going out for a walk and this is when you see the real Chas. I took my camera out one day we went out just to take some snap shots of chas out and about. Click his 'more pictures' to see him having a great time. Being on the other end of Chas's lead really is a pleasure.

Dogs are not our whole life,
But they make our life whole.

Molly

7/8 year old Border Collie
Friends, Romans, Countrymen,  lend me thine ears for mine don't work to well.  Sorry just couldn't resist that, my little joke!  Yes, you should have guessed by now,  I'm deaf, but don't let that put you off cos all you have to do is use your hands instead of your voice.  Apart from that one little hiccup, I'm one of the most loving dogs you could ever wish to meet, I would melt into your skin if I could.  Come along and say hello, after all you have nothing to lose but everything to gain!  What could that be I hear you say...why me of course.

Sadie

5yr old Greyhound
My name is Sadie and I'm a beautiful Greyhound. Please don't think that I need lots of exercise cos I don't.  Two short walks a day are fine, don't get me wrong I'd walk further if you insist but I do like to kip and given half the chance I would sleep away most of the day!  I'm just soooooooooooo lazy but after all that running who can blame me.

Here are a few facts about the beautiful dog know as the greyhound.

The greyhound is the second fastest accelerating land mammal, beaten only by the cheetah.  It's combination of long powerful legs, deep chest and aerodynamic build allows it to reach speeds of up to 39.15mph in less than one and a half seconds, or within 6 strides.

Although greyhounds are extremely fast, they are not high energy dogs.  They are sprinters, and although they love running, they do not require extensive exercise.  Most are quiet, gentle animals.  An adult greyhound will stay healthy and happy with a daily walk of as little as 20 to 30 minutes.  Greyhounds are often referred to as "forty-five mile an hour couch potatoes."

With their excellent temperaments and gentle natures, greyhounds, including retired greyhounds, make wonderful pets.  Generally even tempered and gentle, they are pack orientated dogs which means that they quickly adopt human "masters" into their pack.

Carly

2/3yr old Staffy X
What a proud,  majestic looking young lady.  Carly came to us via a like minded group of people who rescue dogs from pounds when they are due to be put to sleep, as would have been Carly's fate if they and us had not stepped in.  She is a lovely dog but she is getting very sick of spending her days here at the sanctuary. She loves going out for a good walk and hates coming back but can you blame her. All she really wants and needs is the right person/people to give her the love, guidance, stimulation and loving forever home she deserves.

Guess who
I'm black and a real beauty. I have a white patch on my chest and under my chin, a liitle white streak on my nose and some really nice pointy ears, not forgeting my lovely nature. I've been waiting for my loving forever home for over a year now. Seeing me in my kennel you may think I'm to exciteable but seeing me out on a walk you will find me a pleasure.
who am i ?......
Sheba

8yr old German Shepherd X
My friend Jodie and I are new here.  I think you can see from the photo, I'm jut a tad stressed, I couldn't stand still!  It's not that I'm camera shy or anything, it's just tasking a while for me to settle in to my new surroundings.  Jodie is a lot more chilled than I, give her a chew and she is anybody's!  We are looking for a new start in life because our previous owner sadly lost her home.  She thought we were amazing, hope you do tooooooo.
Our friends here at the Sanctuary would like to try and re-home us together, only time will tell.

Oscar has now been rehomed, this cutie was never going to be a guest for long, but you could still come down and see his friends.

The Mayflower Sanctuary Waiting List
When a dog is rehomed at any dog rehoming place the sad truth is there are always many many other dogs waiting to fill that space. For various reasons there owners have decided to give the dog up. We end up with a waiting list of these dogs and I'm afraid most owners will only wait so long. If you don't see the dog you are looking for on this page, you could call the sanctuary and ask for details of the dogs that are on our waiting list. Please also remember that we do have more doggy guests at the sanctuary than are shown on the web site at present so why not come down and see us.
Solo

5yr old X Breed
Oh dear, I'm yet another casualty of the "were moving and cannot take the dog with us" syndrome.  Soooooooooooooo I now find myself looking for a new home, hopefully a forever home this time. I would be better suited as an only dog and I'm sorry but I'm not keen on our feline friends either, I am good with children though.

*Not all our dogs are shown here so why not call in, or call us for more details.*

Please Note:
*We do not re-home ANY dog if a kennel and run is to be used and all our dogs are pets, NOT guard dogs

10 month old German Shepherd X
The reason I'm here?  Well apparently I just got toooooooooooo big for my previous owner to handle.  I don't tend to show myself as well as some of the other dogs at the Sanctuary when we have visitors, it's only cos I'm scared.  Please look past this and imagine what a fantastic dog I would be in the right hands.

***********Chas again *************

Chas has been a guest at the sanctuary for 1 year now. In fact it will be exactly 1 year this weekend, 27th Oct 07. Why has he been here so long?, well we really do not know. Call for more details on chas or even better call in, look beyond the fact that he may get a bit manic when strangers are walking past him during visiting hours, take him out for a good walk and he will show you how great he is. He really is a lovely boy and would make a great family dog.

An Appeal for treats, chews and biscuits etc
Carly here is leading the campaign after Sunny's long campaign.
Thank you Sunny. (He is now in his loving forever home.)
We all love treats and so do our dogs. If you can, please donate some lovely tasty treats.

Tina 6/7yr old X breed
Murthy and Trixie have been re-homed
Boy are we lucky!!!!!  Why's that you may ask...well our beloved owner passed away leaving the three of us all alone.  It wasn't looking good for us at all, that doggie heaven in the sky was looming ever closer!  Suddenly, there was a light at the end of the tunnel!  We were all taken to the Mayflower Sanctuary, thank God they agreed to give us all a second chance at life.  We're not silly, we know that it is highly unlikely that there is someone out there who would be willing to take all three of us on so, what will be will be.  We just want to feel safe and loved, be that seperate, then that is ok with us.

********* Tina (Dog of the Month) **********
Why?..... Because she is a lovely girl and is even more desperate to find her loving forever home now her best friends Murthy and Trixie have left her on her own, after being re-homed.

Joe

Lab X
Male - 3 Years old
Joe was returned to us by his previous owners because he was too much for them to handle. He is still only a young dog who has lots of energy and needs help to channel this into acceptable play rather than being destructive. For this reason he needs his next forever home to be with someone who won’t leave him alone for long periods at a time and will have time and patience to complete his training. Could that person be you?
Hello everyone, it's me Callie again. I've been here looking for my loving forever home for some time now but I'm not giving up. I know in my heart I would make a wonderful loving family pet and companion and I'm only 3 years old. They tell me I might be honoured with being dog of the month for april but I would be more honoured if little Charlie got the title and I was in my new home with you. Paws crossed. xx

Tara

Lurcher X
Female – 2 years old
Unfortunately Tara is here looking for a new home because she was fighting with the other dog in her previous home. Her owners said that they were having to walk the two dogs separately and watch them constantly when they were together. This was not an ideal situation so Tara is now waiting for a loving family where she will be an only dog and get all the love and attention that she deserves.

Buddy

X Breed
Male – 3 years old
Buddy is here because his previous owners have had to move house and can’t take him with them. He can be quite nervous at first but as soon as he gets to know you he is very loving and playful. He loves to play fetch with his ball. All he needs is a little time and patience and you will soon see the side of him that we do Ask to take him into the paddock and get to know him better and you’ll see.

Samuel

Greyhound
Male – Adult
Samuel is yet another stray ! He was found wandering around a building site and was eventually caught by some workmen and brought here. He had no id on him, no collar and not microchipped so there is little chance of finding his owners although we will keep looking. Samuel has a lovely temperament. He likes nothing better than to race around the paddock and then spend the rest of the day sleeping or watching the world go by.
 Typical  greyhound !
Randy

X Breed
Male – 9 Months old

Randy came to us from another Rescue far away from here where he had been taken as a stray by the Dog Warden. When his ‘time was up’ and his future uncertain Mayflower was contacted and agreed to help Randy find his new forever home. We have found him to a lovely guy who deserves a second chance. He needs time and patience to complete his training but with the right person we’re sure that Randy will blossom

Guess who
I'd been a guest at the sanctuary for a long long time. Anyone who has been regular on this web site will know that. I'm in my loving forever home now.
