SAMMY'S PLIGHT

Sammy a young, beautiful, gentle Saluki X did not deserve the horror that had befallen him.  I will endeavour to tell you his story.

Sammy was taken to a local dog pound as a stray, the victim of an unwanted litter of puppies no doubt, given away to anyone who knocked on the door.  A family with young children adopted him.  Unfortunately for Sammy the children left the gate open, as they so often do.  Being a young, inquisitive dog he made his bid for freedom only to be mown down by a car.  With terrible wounds and in obvious pain the owners took Sammy to a local vet.  They were informed that the bill for his treatment would cost around £150. They did not have £150 so poor Sammy was taken home without any treatment to his wounds.

Six days after being hit by a car Sammy was taken back to the pound where he saw yet another vet!  The diagnosis was that his wounds had been left untreated and open for too long, cream and antibiotics were prescribed.  Why, when this dog was known to have been hit by a car and was in obvious agony did no- one think to x-ray him…..

We were contacted by a lady who had seen Sammy and was very concerned for him.  We did not hesitate to take this dog on.  What a pitiful sight greeted us, open wounds that were turning green, hardly able to walk but yet this courageous dog still managed a wag of his tail.  He was taken straight to the sanctuary’s vet who immediately x-rayed him and found him to have fractured his pelvis in three places.  I somehow don’t think cream or antibiotics would have sorted that, do you!  Despite being on the strongest pain killers his pain was increasing and at one stage it was suggested that the kindest thing would be to let him go.  We at the Mayflower Sanctuary do not give up that easily and so a specialist was contacted.

Ten days after his accident we made the journey with Sammy to see a specialist in Thurnscoe.  As we took him in we feared the worst but putting him to sleep was never an option.  The vet was fairly optimistic, the x-ray showed the horror of his injuries. The worst of the fractures was very near to his spinal column.  Sammy went to theatre that afternoon.  His bones had started to heal already, all in the wrong places of course.    Operating on such a small area was exhausting for the vets in question, and they tried for over an hour on just the one fracture to align it with a screw.  In the end they had to settle for a smaller screw but an acceptable alignment was achieved.

Sammy came home to the Sanctuary the next day. It is going to be a long road back to fitness, with cage rest for the biggest part of it.  All through this terrible ordeal (and lets face it this dog must have been in agony), not once has he shown any aggression to any of the vets, or us who tend him at the Sanctuary.

We are only a small charity with limited funds.  The cost of treatment for Sammy is now in excess of £1,500 and on going.
